Want a uniform mixture of Hot and Cold water while having a bath?


The best way to get lukewarm water uniformly throughout the bucket is by pouring Hot water to the bucket first and cold water next. Why?


Heat transfer!! The cold water being heavy, wants to occupy the bottom of the bucket; while the hot water being lighter, gives way for the cold water and moves to top. This induces a natural mixing motion which mixes the water evenly giving us a lukewarm mixture.

If you do the reverse, i.e, pouring cold water first and hot water next, this is what happens:

The heat transfer takes place only along the boundary where the hot and cold water meet. This doesn't induce any natural mixing motion, thereby giving way to non-uniform temperature in the bucket. The top-most part would be hot, but as you go down, it would get cooler.
